Alligator Apps: Simple and Straightforward and Free!

Alligator Apps has released some useful apps for learning and practicing Dolch Words, the Fry 1000 Instant Words, and Phonics.

Fry’s Instant Words has 24 lists that you can customize in several ways, including font size, font color, sound, and learning or game mode. The words are printed in a clear, easy-to-read font on a white background.

Sight Words

Sight Words works the same way, using the Dolch Word list. There are six sets of words, pre-school through third grade, as well as a set of just nouns.

Phonics Genius has over 6,000 unique words grouped into 225 categories.  It has the same features for customizing lists.  It is really easy to choose a list that supports whatever you are working on: silent e, consonant blends, vowel digraphs, and more. It’s a good way to practice the patterns my clients have been working on from Words by Marcia Henry or Barton Reading & Spelling by Susan Barton.

In addition to these apps for beginning readers,  Alligator Apps recently released Little Solver, which is a very cool app for learning analogies that uses  a variety of figures.  It has 14 levels, including analogies with no change all the way up to analogies that contrast, rotate, and add something.  In this app you can track your progress on the various sets.

All the apps are available in the iTunes store.  Best of all, they are currently FREE!
